1099-K for Gig Workers in 2026: What Changed and What It Means for You
The short answer: federally, payment apps and platforms send a 1099-K only when your payments top $20,000 and 200 transactions, and businesses send a 1099-NEC above $2,000 for 2026 payments. Some states still require forms at much lower amounts. Either way, all your gig income is taxable, form or no form.
1099-K vs. 1099-NEC
| Form | Who sends it | Federal threshold (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-K | Payment platforms and some apps that process payments for you | Over $20,000 and over 200 transactions |
| 1099-NEC | Businesses that pay you as a contractor | $2,000 or more (up from $600) |
The 1099-K threshold went back to $20,000 and 200 transactions under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, after years of planned drops toward $600. The 1099-NEC threshold rose to $2,000 starting with 2026 payments and will adjust for inflation after that (CPA Practice Advisor).
State thresholds can be lower
Many states set their own reporting rules, and some still require a 1099-K at $600 or other lower amounts. So you may get a form even when the federal rule wouldn't require one. Check your state tax agency's website for its current threshold.
Didn't get a 1099?
You still owe tax on everything you earned. The IRS says all gig income must be reported, whether or not you get a form (IRS Gig Economy Tax Center). Use your app's earnings or tax summary, and keep your own records of payouts.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reporting only what's on the form. Report all income, then subtract your expenses.
- Paying tax on gross payments. A 1099-K may include amounts that aren't your profit. Your mileage and other costs come off on Schedule C.
- Getting two forms for the same money. Compare your forms with your earnings summary so nothing is counted twice.
